In the early days of Bariatric surgery the choice of powdered products for patients was very limited and the product designed for this nutritional need was the imported Optifast. Optifast contained sufficient macro nutrients to meet basic metabolic needs and added vitamins and minerals delivered to an appropriate percentage of the Recommended Dietary Intake. It didn’t however comply with any Food Standards Code standard which created a dilemma for FSANZ. The product was sold in many countries around the world and this type of product was considered an important part of the Bariatric surgery process so it was decided by FSANZ that a new category would be introduced.
